Supercats Finish the Regular Season in Second Place
Written by Trevor Price
Saturday, 31 July 2010
July 31: St Laurence Geelong Supercats 79 (N. Herbert 24, J. Bullock 19, I. Muhammad 13) defeated by Kilsyth Cobras 84 (F. Lockett 25, T. Lang 14, R. Bathie 13) at The Arena.

The St Laurence Geelong Supercats will travel to Nunawading for the Major Semi-final of the Crazy John’s SEABL South Conference next weekend following a loss in their last match of the regular season to the Kilsyth Cobras at the Arena on Saturday night. The Supercats scored just 79 points, their second lowest score of the season, in the five point loss to hand the East Conference minor premiership to the Cobras.
The visitors burst out of the blocks from the first tip off racing ahead with no less than 6 three pointers in the first quarter. After having opened up an eleven point lead, Nathan Herbert and Jamie Medved countered with threes of their own to bring the margin back to a respectable 4 points at quarter time.

With Isma’il Muhammad well contained, the Supercats normal scoring output was down, but Herbert and J’Nathan Bullock kept the scoreboard ticking in the second. Once again Kilsyth got away to a good lead of nine points but great defensive effort from Medved and Herbert kept the Supercats in it and the margin was reduced to just 2 points at the half 39 to 41.

The Supercats did not count on an 11 to nil run by the visitors led by import Fernandez Lockett however they soon countered by scoring the next eleven points themselves. The teams went basket for basket for the rest of the quarter with Kilsyth’s three point shooting keeping them in the lead and holding a four point margin at the last break.

The cobras again built out the lead to 8 points with four minutes to play but Bullock and Braith Cox helped Geelong chip away at that lead. Isma’il Muhammad’s massive reverse pump dunk was the highlight of the game and put the Supercats in the lead for the first time in the match. The capacity home crowd blew the roof off the Arena but the momentum could not be sustained and, with the Supercats needing to foul, the Cobras won the match 84 to 79.

Ironically it was also Kilsyth who provided Geelong’s worst score of the season of 69 points when we played up at Kilsyth earlier in the year. Nathan Herbert was Geelong’s best scorer for the night with 24 points while Bullock had 19 and Muhammad was held to 13. Lockett led all scorers with 25 for the visitors.

The Supercats travel to Nunawading for the Major Semi-final next weekend. Depending on the result of that match, the Supercats will host the preliminary final on August 14th or the Conference Grand Final on August 21st.
