July 22: St Laurence Geelong Supercats 106 (I. Muhammad 31, J. Bullock 26, N. Herbert 16) defeated Frankston Blues 85 (C. Briggs 25, M. Runchey 16, M. Chapman 12) at Frankston Basketball Centre.
The St Laurence Geelong Supercats have extracted sweet revenge for last year’s SEABL South Conference Final loss by soundly beating last year’s champion Frankston on their home court by 21 points. The percentage boosting win moves Geelong to second place on the ladder with one regular season game to play.
Both sides were locked together for the first three minutes of the contest before Seb Loader, starting once again at the centre, showed some vintage form with rebounds at both ends of the floor and a couple of strong baskets to give the Supercats a narrow lead. Isma’il Muhammad built on the foundation with seven personal points in the space of a minute to give Geelong a ten point lead. A couple of threes from the Blues got them back in it but the Supercats still held a four point lead at the first break.
With Muhammad and J’Nathan Bullock both in peak form and Nathan Herbert also a solid contributor, the Supercats slowly and steadily built on their lead in the second with the home side seemingly having no answers. Blues veteran Andrew Harmes, received a technical foul for dissent and shortly after another tech was handed to Blues Coach Bill Runchey. Braith Cox, celebrating his 100th game for the Supercats, made no mistake with the four free throws as Geelong blew the game apart increasing their margin to 14 at the half.
The third quarter was more of the same, with Bullock, Herbert and Muhammad all scoring well and Daniel George back to the best of his form. By three quarter time, Geelong had put the result beyond doubt building their lead out to 24 points.
The pain continued for the Blues in the last as the Supercats poured on the points and built the lead out beyond 30. Muhammad’s reverse jam in the open front court signalled the start of party time and his alley oop pass for a Nathan Herbert dunk had the Geelong star grinning like a split watermelon. Head Coach Jamie O’Loughlin cleared Geelong’s bench with 4 minutes to play and the Supercats second five held on for a 21 point win.
Muhammad led all scorers with 31 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal while Bullock had a solid 26 points and Herbert finished with 16. Cox had 13 in his hundredth Supercats game while George rounded out five Supercats in double figures with 11. Blues import Chaz Briggs had 25 for the home side.
