July 8: St Laurence Geelong Supercats 86 (I. Muhammad 33, N. Herbert 23,B. Cox 13) defeated Sandringham Sabres 70 (T. Garlepp6, K. Patrick 15, D. Dillon 11, N. Crosswell11) at The Sandringham Leisure Centre.
The St Laurence Geelong Supercats have secured a comfortable away victory 86 points to 70 over Crazy John’s SEABL South Conference ladder leaders, the Sandringham Sabres in a special Thursday night school holiday fixture.
Geelong made the best of the early going racing ahead to a seven point lead as Nathan Herbert, Isma’il Muhammad and J’Nathan Bullock led the scoring against a lack lustre Sandringham outfit. Sandringham then chipped away at Geelong’s lead bringing it back to within 2 but Braith Cox’s three gave Geelong a handy five point lead at the first break.
A 14 to 4 point run to open up the second quarter built Geelong’s lead to 15 points. Bullock continued to score well and Muhammad had 9 for the term as the Supercats held onto that margin until half time. Sandringham were disappointing with just 8 points for the period.
Geelong again went on a run to open the second half, this time seven-nil as Bullock was scoring well and Daniel George was back to his best form blocking Daniel Dillon’s shot spectacularly. Tom Garlepp’s 3 for Sandringham broke the drought but Bullock replied. Shortly after, however, Bullock rolled his left ankle after landing awkwardly on an opponent’s foot and he took no further part in the match. Hebert again lifted and combined with Muhammad to build a mach winning lead of 23 at the last break.
Jamie O’Loughlin rested his stars at the start of the last quarter and Sandringham combined to bring the Margin back to 16 but then Herbert’s 3 pointer and then a steal and another 2 helped Geelong out to the biggest lead of the match of 24 points with just under 3 minutes to go and Sabre’s Coach Vince Cravelli had seen enough substituting out his entire on court 5. O’Loughlin also emptied Geelong’s bench as the Supercats ran out easy victors 86 to 70.
Muhammad had another great game with 33 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists a steal and a block while Herbert had 23 points to back up his player of the week award from last weekend. Cox finished with 13 and George 9. Garlepp was the best for Sandringham with 16.
The Supercats have the remainder of this weekend off and return to the Arena on Saturday July 17th to take on Canberra.
