June 12: St Laurence Geelong Supercats 109 (N. Herbert 36, I. Muhammad 28, J. Bullock 16) defeated Brisbane Spartans 91 (T. Demos 22, D. Williamson 20, A. Cannan 20) at Carina Stadium Brisbane.
The St Laurence Geelong Supercats could have been forgiven for dropping their bundle following last week’s heart breaking loss to Ballarat, however, this classy side is far better than that proving it on Saturday night as they made the league’s longest journey and then roundly defeated the Brisbane Spartans on their home pine at Carina.
The first quarter went basket for basket for the first five minutes until 2 three pointers from Isma’il Muhammad helped Geelong open up an eleven point lead. With Simon Taylor returning fire with a couple of threes of his own Brisbane fought back to be just 2 points down at quarter time.
Nathan Herbert and J’Nathan Bullock led Geelong on a 12 to 2 run to start the second quarter and open up the lead to 12 points. With Tyson Demos and veteran Drew Williamson providing the resistance for the Spartans, they managed to stay in the game with the Supercats and keep the margin to 10 points at the half.
The Supercats took control in the third quarter. Herbert and Muhammad continued to lead the scoring with Sebastian Loader winding back the clock finishing with 5 rebounds and Braith Cox and Bullock contributing solidly. The Supercats outscored their opponents by 9 points for the term and led by 19 at the last break.
A six nil run from Geelong blew the lead out to 25 and put the match beyond doubt. While Demos, Williamson and Cannon continued to score well for Brisbane. Herbert and Muhammad were on fire for Geelong a Bullock and Owusu aided the scoring. With two and a half minutes to play and the lead still at 22 points, Geelong Head Coach Jamie O’Loughlin put his entire bench on the court to give them some well deserved minutes. The Supercats ran out 18 point winners with 109 points to 91 on the back of 50% field goal shooting including 13 of 30 from beyond the arc.
Nathan Herbert had a night out with 36 points while Muhammad was back in his best form with 28 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Bullock had 16, Owusu 12 and Cox 10 to round out the 5 double figure scorers for the Supercats. Demos was the best for the home side with 20 points.
The Supercats have a bye next weekend and will host their annual Superball on court at the Arena next Saturday night before taking on Knox at home on Friday June 25.
