The St Laurence Geelong Supercats have lost to the Bendigo Braves in Bendigo on Friday night before returning to the Arena for their first home game of the season and capitulating to the Hobart Chargers.
It was a close first quarter in Bendigo on Friday night with Daniel George scoring the first basket for Geelong before Jason Reardon and J’Nathan Bullock started off where they left things last weekend scoring from all angles. Bendigo Stayed with Geelong through Luke Meyer and import Ivan McFarlin as Geelong held the lead 19 to 18 at the first break.
Geelong kept with the home side up until three minutes to play of the second term when the Braves went on a 14 to 4 run to break open a 15 point margin at the half.
McFarlin put his side ahead by 20 points early in the third quarter before the Supercats began to stage a fightback with Braith Cox leading from the front. By the last break the Supercats had reduced the margin to 10 points.
Cox, Nick Owusu and Bullock continued to chip away at the lead and Cox’s three pointer bought the game back to just a 2 point margin with 90 seconds to play but the Braves were not to be denied on their home pine as the Supercats could not answer their last 11 points as they defeated Geelong 89 to 80.
Bullock was the top scorer for Geelong with 18 while Cox found some form with 17 and Reardon was again consistent with 14. Meyer led all scorers with 29 for the Braves.
On Saturday night the Supercats returned to the Arena for their first home game of the 2010 SEABL season against Hobart.
The Supercats started the game strongly with three’s to Reardon and Isma’il Muhammad but Mark Banovic put Hobart back in front with two three’s of his own and then another 2 pointer. The Supercats regained the lead and held it for the remainder of the term but the Charger’s Chuck Long scored a three on the buzzer to put his side ahead 23 to 22 at quarter time.
In a low scoring second quarter, the sides went basket for basket with another Banovic three extending the lead for the visitors to five points at the half as the Supercats only managed 13 points for the term.
By the end of the third quarter all of the momentum was with Hobart. Veteran player/coach Anthony Stewart shot a couple of three’s in succession to boost the Charger’s lead out to 14 points.
Another Stewart 3 extended the lead out to 19 at the start of the last and then the Supercats started to reel them in. The Supercats got back to within seven points as Jamie Medved added a pair of three pointers for Geelong but Hobart rallied and held on to a ten point victory 92 to 82 to complete a disappointing weekend for the Supercats.
Muhammad had 25 points to go with his 12 rebounds for Geelong while Reardon had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Bullock had 17 points in a consistent weekend. Banovic led all scorers with 30 for the Chargers.
The Supercats return to the Arena next Saturday night to take on Mount Gambier.
