The St Laurence Geelong Supercats have crowned their 2009 MVP with local star, Jason Reardon taking out the award in a tense vote count at the Alcoa ARP Appreciation Night. The MVP caps a great comeback season for Reardon who returned in 2009 after a one year stint with North Adelaide.
In a dramatic vote count, Reardon trailed by 3 votes coming into the final regular season game. Reardon polled a maximum 6 votes in the last game to pip import, Isma’il Muhammad, and win his first club MVP.
Reardon lead the count by as much as 17 votes after a solid start to the year while Muhammad found his feet at his new club. The American found his rhythm in the middle rounds and fished strongly to grab the lead with one round remaining. Reardon’s final game where he almost achieved a triple double (25points, 11 rebound, 7 assists) helped the Supercats thump ladder leader Brisbane and earned him the club MVP.
A star of the Basketball Geelong club and representative program, Reardon has played 6 seasons with the Supercats and amassed 170 club games. He was humbled by winning the MVP thanking his coaches and team mates. “I am honoured to win this award and be named alongside some great players in the Supercats’ history. All credit goes to the coaching staff and my team mates. We had a good year and gave it a real shake so hopefully the future is bright for this team and championship success is realised in 2010.” Reardon said.
In other awards, Kris Van Parreren won the Alcoa Most Improved player award and club volunteer co-ordinator, Sue Wright, won the Ken Price Best Club Person award.
