July 10: Brisbane Spartans 141 (D. Williamson 25, A. Cannan 25, T. Demos 23) defeated St Laurence Geelong Supercats 127 (I. Muhammad 25, B. Cox 22, D. George 20) at Carina Stadium, Brisbane.

The St Laurence Geelong Supercats have made their task of securing a top 2 ladder position all the harder after falling to SEABL East Conference leaders Brisbane in Brisbane on Friday night with a high score line of 141 to 127.

Brisbane skipped away at the start leaving the stunned Supercats in their wake. Half way through the first quarter the sharp shooting of Spartans trio Tyson Demos, Ash Cannan and Drew Williamson saw the home side lead 32 to 13 before Geelong came out to play. Brisbane scored a massive 47 for the term to Geelong’s respectable 31.

The 33 to 32 second quarter saw Daniel George as Geelong’s top scorer with 13 at the half. A run by Isma’il Muhammad and Jason Reardon at the start of the third saw Geelong win the term by 3 points for Geelong to be in arrears by 14 and still a chance at the last break.

Wiley Brisbane coach, Bruce Palmer, had clearly done his homework on the Supercats’ spearhead Nathan Herbert holding the star to just nine points and causing him to foul out of the game in the last quarter. With Reardon also fouling out and Clifton Lee left on 5, the Supercats could not challenge in the last with the lead blowing out to 24 before Muhammad and Braith Cox rallied to go on an 11 to 1 run at the finish and keep the margin at 14.

Geelong’s lack of defence in the first and the high foul count by the end cost Geelong the match 141 to 127.

Muhammad had 17 second half points to finish with 25 while Cox had 22 and George 20. Cannan and Williamson were the best for the home side with 25 each.

The Supercats are away again to Bendigo next Friday before returning to the Arena next Saturday to face Kilsyth Cobras.
