Supercats Spooked by Spectres Print
Written by Trevor Price
Saturday, 20 June 2009

June 20: Nunawading Spectres 102 (T. Greer 30, N. Kennedy 25, M. Thorp 11) defeated St Laurence Geelong Supercats 84 (J. Reardon 24, J. Medved 18, C. Lee 12) at the Arena.

On paper a team with 4 wins for the season should not beat a team with 13 wins for the season when they meet that team on their home court but basketball doesn’t always go by the book and Nunawading knew that as they comprehensively defeated an ailing Supercats team at the Arena on Saturday night.

Star guard Nathan Herbert was unavailable due to attending an Australian Boomers training camp in Canberra. This should have been countered by the Spectres Tom Greer attending the same camp, however, Greer pulled out of the Boomers camp with a shoulder complaint but was strangely fit enough to take the court for the Spectres.

With Jason Reardon suffering from a toe injury and several other Supercats succumbing to the flu, there were just six Supercats available for Thursday night’s training session. Head coach Mark Leader remarked before the game, “That’s never a good sign and this is definitely a danger game for us”.

The first quarter of the game set the tone with the Supercats just holding the lead by a point at quarter time. The match highlight for Geelong came in the first as Lee and Muhammad scored back to back open slam dunks. Muhammad’s dunk was an amazing 360 degree spin in the air for a 2 handed jam.

Greer and guard Nathan Kennedy helped the Spectres to a 32 to 18 second quarter as Geelong’s defence fell away badly. Geelong came out in the third to attack the Spectres but Nunawading had their momentum going and extended their lead to 16 at the last break before running out 18 point victors.

Jason Reardon and Jamie Medved could hold their heads high scoring 25 and 18 respectively including 6 three pointers from Reardon, while Lee had 12. Greer led all scorers with 30 for the visitors.

The Supercats will use next weekend’s bye to host their annual “Superball” before they take the court next against the Mount Gambier Pioneers on Friday July 3rd.
