Kingy's Wrap: 15 June Print
Written by Tom King
Monday, 15 June 2009

kingy.jpgIt was almost the perfect weekend for the Geelong Supercats. Mark Leader’s men kept up their end of the bargain with wins over Dandenong on Saturday night at The Arena 127-110. That was followed by yesterday’s nail-biter against Knox in suburban Melbourne yesterday 113-111, thanks to a buzzer beater from star import Isma’il Muhammad.

“(I was) very happy to come away with two wins,” coach Leader said.

“Especially with the schedule- playing last (Saturday) night, then back down here (Knox) 2 o’clock this afternoon.

“I thought the guys really stuck to the task and came up with a very good win (against the Raiders.”

The only letdown was the team they are chasing for second spot in the SEAL South Conference, Hobart, split their weekend trip to the mainland.

The reigning National Champions were upset by Dandenong yesterday after sneaking past Albury-Wodonga by 4 points on Friday night, leaving them with a 12-5 record, while the Supercats sit at 13-6.

Nathan Herbert showed why he’s off to Canberra this week for a training camp with the Australian squad, putting up his hand for Player-of-the-week honours with 40 against Dandenong, which came at 70% from the field, and 30 against Knox, including a perfect 12 from 12 from the charity stripe.

“He was very, very good,” Leader said.

“He hit some big free throws today (Sunday) right down the stretch.”

Muhammad’s performance against Knox also impressed Leader, and not just because of his buzzer beater which capped off a season high 29 points.

“He’s really starting to show that’s he not just a penetrate to the basket type of player,” Leader said.

“He can (also) hit the three-pointer, (but) probably the most impressive with Isma’il was the job he did on (Knox import) CJ Massingale.

“When you get your imports playing good, solid ‘D’ it does rub off, and everybody knows we are all in it together.”

Swingman Jason Reardon also came in for praise from his coach, after assuming more of the ball handling responsibility in the absence of injured skipper Braith Cox.

“We put Jason into that spot and he played the point guard role very well,” Leader said.

“He really run the offence as well as anybody could in those circumstances.”

The Supercats face South Conference cellar-dwellers Nunawading on Saturday night at The Arena before having another break ahead of the final month of the season.

The Spectres, however, will be no pushover, after a upsetting the previously unbeaten Frankston yesterday.
