May 17: St Laurence Geelong Supercats 109 (D. George 26, N. Herbert 25, S. Myers 23) defeated Kilsyth Cobras 107 (G. Leonard 25, J. Werner 24, A. Jackson 19) at the Kilsyth Sports Stadium. The St Laurence Geelong Supercats stole victory out of the hands of the Kilsyth Cobras on Saturday night when Shawn Myers landed a jump shot with less than 2 seconds on the clock to put Geelong ahead for the first time in the match and secure an unlikely victory 109 to 107.
In a high scoring opening term, the Cobras’ import combination of Zack Melvik and Joe Werner proved their worth and led the home side’s scoring effort of 34 points, while Daniel George and Nathan Herbert led the charge for Geelong to be just five points behind at the first break. With Brad Bridgewater out of sorts against his old team, it was left to George, Herbert and Shawn Myers to get the job done for Geelong. In a hotly contested second quarter, a dispute over a Kilsyth inbound pass, which was allowed to be replayed after Braith Cox had stolen it the first time around led to a Technical foul. The resultant free throws and possession blew the lead out to more than ten points. Late in the quarter Melvik appeared to land awkwardly under the basket, injuring his foot and he took no further part in the match. Kilsyth had done enough to go in at half time holding a six point margin 56 to 50 with George the high scorer for Geelong with 16. The third quarter was a replay of the first, high scoring and some crucial errors by Geelong helped the home side increase their lead to 12 by three quarter time. In the last quarter the Supercats were playing above themselves as the Cobras started to tire. With six minutes to play, the Supercats tied the scores at 93 each thanks to a Myers three pointer, one of just four scored by Geelong on the night. A bench technical foul, called on Cox for some comments to the referee, gave the Cobras another two shots and possession and helped them to get the margin back out to ten with three minutes to play and it did not look good for Geelong. Shawn Myers had not read the script, however, and took the challenge up to the home side in the last minutes and managed to lead the team to get the scores back level with 20 seconds left. Myers again drove to the basket and calmly pulled up for an 8 foot jumper with seconds on the clock. The basket fell, the buzzer sounded and the Supercats had won their 14th game of the season. George finished with the top score for Geelong with 26 points and 19 rebounds, while the brave Herbert, who suffered an ankle injury training with the Dragons during the week, finished with 25 but it was Myers who was the hero with 23 points especially when they counted. The Supercats return to the Arena next Saturday to play Hobart before travelling to Nunawading next Sunday. |
