May 2: St Laurence Geelong Supercats 106 (B. Bridgewater 22, S. Myers 20, N. Herbert 20) defeated North West Tasmania Thunder (S. Armstrong 22, B. Nuckles 20, N. Haywood 12) at the Geelong Arena.

The St Laurence Geelong Supercats have continued their unbeaten run at the Geelong Arena with a comprehensive victory over the North West Tasmania Thunder at the Arena on Friday night.

Geelong opened up an early lead but an unsportsmanlike foul called on Shawn Myers and accurate shooting from Thunder veteran Sam Armstrong saw the visitors take the lead at quarter time 36 to 32 with Armstrong having 17 points in the quarter.

Brad Bridgewater injected some excitement into the game in the second with a couple of trademark dunks as the Geelong defence intensified to hold the visitors to 15 points for the quarter while Bridgewater, Myers and Nathan Herbert helped Geelong to a 31 point quarter to open up a 12 point lead at the half.

The third quarter was marred by a technical foul for dissent called on Supercat Braith Cox. The resulting free throws and side ball possession netted the visitors five points to bring the margin back to 7. This only seemed to spur the home side on and, within minutes, the Supercats had dropped it into top gear and  extended their lead to 20 points at the last break. With the game safely under control, head coach Mark Leader allowed himself the luxury of running the bench for the last four and a half minutes of the game as Geelong ran out comfortable victors 106 to 82.

Last weekend’s Player of the week, Brad Bridgewater top scored for Geelong with 22 points while Nathan Herbert and Shawn Myers had 20 each. Armstrong could not keep up his first quarter form but still managed the top score for the visitors with 22.

The Supercats will now host the Mount Gambier Pioneers at the Arena next Friday night.
