April 12: St Laurence Geelong Supercats 104 (B. Bridgewater 19, S. Myers 18, N. Herbert 17) defeated Knox Raiders 99 (C. Massingale 47, L. Strong 14, N. Payne 10) at the Knox Converse Stadium. The St Laurence Geelong Supercats recorded their fifth straight win on Saturday night to move to an eight win and two loss record. This time the opponent was the Knox Raiders on their home court.
The Supercats opened with a flurry of scoring to lead 9 points to 1 before the Raiders star import CJ Massingale hit his first three for the night which triggered a minor fight back by Knox to draw level. Brad Bridgewater and Shawn Myers kept the scoreboard ticking over and Geelong was again able to break away to a 35 to 29 lead at quarter time despite a 17 point haul for the quarter from Massingale. The second quarter ebbed and flowed but was remarkably even. Highlighted by a technical foul on Massingale for dissent and a Knox bench technical foul with just three seconds to play, Massingale’s 26 points helped the home side narrow the margin by just 1 point to 8 at the half. Knox came out strongly at the start of the second half and wiped off the deficit in less than three minutes. Some sloppy ball handling from Geelong saw Knox move ahead by six points at the mid point of the quarter before the Supercats rallied led by Nathan Herbert and Braith Cox with Jordan Hill’s three pointer on the buzzer leaving Knox ahead by two points 82 to 80. Hill undid his good work in the fourth, however, when he grabbed at Massingale to prevent a fast break and earned an unsportsmanlike foul. Knox again moved ahead but Geelong chipped away to wrest the lead back with just over four minutes to play. Knox had their chances thanks to some missed free throws, but the Supercats held on for a gritty win 104 to 99. Geelong played 8 of its eleven players with six scoring in double figures. Bridgewater was the best with 19 but he was closely followed by Myers (18), Herbert (17), Cox (15) and Owusu (14) with Daniel George rounding out the double figure scorers with 10. Massingale was by far and away the leading scorer of the night for Knox with 47. The long awaited return to the Arena of former St Laurence Geelong Supercats centre Jamal Brown has turned out to be a bit of a non-event as the Supercats clinically took apart his Ballarat Miners side at the Arena on Friday night. The rivalry between the two regional powers was at its best after the Miners handed out a lesson to Geelong just two weeks ago up the Midland Highway. The visitors stayed with Geelong for most of the first quarter before a dunk from Brad Bridgewater signalled to the huge Arena crowd that the Supercats had discovered how to get the ball to their new big man. This started somewhat of a flood as Braith Cox found his range from the three point line and the Supercats intensity lifted to finish out the quarter 12 points to 1 to hold an eleven point advantage. The energy at both ends of the court remained throughout the second quarter as Geelong piled on 66 points for the first half to lead their opponents by 18 at the main break. Half way through the third quarter head coach Mark Leader began to think about the weekend’s second game on Saturday night and rotated young gun Dane Bow onto the floor. The enthusiastic Bow did not disappoint him landing a three pointer and following this up with three more triples later in the match to score a career best 12 points. With Geelong holding a 25 point buffer at the last break, Leader substituted his entire bench on for most of the last quarter and they acquitted themselves well with Kris Van Parreren landing a three from distance and Bridgewater netting 20 points to go with his eight rebounds. With the Miners also saving their stars for a Saturday night home fixture, the Supercats completed the demolition by scoring 33 points to 18 in the last to account for the loss earlier in the season by winning 127 to 87. Braith Cox continued a stellar season with 28 points and five assists while Nathan Herbert had 21 points and Bridgewater 20. Ricky Henderson was the stand out player for the visitors with 19 while former Supercats guard Mat Hardiman had 13 points. Jamal Brown would have been disappointed with his 10 points from the game. The Supercats have yet another tricky double header next weekend facing Nunawading at the Arena on Friday before travelling to Brisbane on Saturday to take on the Southern Districts Spartans. |
