Dellavedova 13) at the A.I.S. Training Hall. April 5: St Laurence Geelong Supercats 107 (N. Herbert 25, B. Cox 18, B. Bridgewater 16) defeated Canberra Gunners 101 (Z. Todorovski 29, G. Baird 13, S. Bresnik 12) at Belconnen Basketball Stadium The St Laurence Geelong Supercats have completed the double header in the nation’s capital winning their second game of the weekend against the Canberra Gunners by 6 after Friday’s win over the Australian Institute of Sport by 12 points.
The Supercats started strongly against the Gunners clocking up 39 points in the first quarter on the back of phenomenal 70% shooting, while the home side could only manage 28. Geelong carried their lead throughout the second quarter and held a handy 16 point lead with 2 minutes 13 to play in the quarter but a stunning 9 zip run by Canberra narrowed the margin to just seven at the half. In an even third quarter Nathan Herbert was fouled heavily while attempting a three pointer and recovered to land all three free throws to take the margin out to 10 before the Gunners again rallied, assisted by another 2 three pointers to guard Zlatko Todorovski, at the end of the period to narrow Geelong’s lead to 4 point at the last break. Geelong held firm in the last quarter and gradually increased there margin to be 12 up with 20 seconds to play before a last ditch effort by Canberra netted them two threes in the dying seconds of the game. Geelong ran out the victors 107 to 101. Nathan Herbert shone for Geelong with 25, while Braith Cox had 18 and Brad Bridgewater had 16 points to average over 19 points per game for the weekend. Todorovski’s six three pointers for the match helped him to 29 points to be the outstanding player for Canberra. On Friday night, the Supercats opened their weekend with a solid 12 point victory over the Australian Institute of Sport side. The game was evenly poised for most of the match with the Supercats holding a four point lead at the first change and holding on for a 52 to 49 lead at the half. The AIS came back in the third to narrow the margin to just one point but the talented Supercats, with Shawn Myers now in top gear, forged ahead in the last period 35 to 24 to secure the victory. Brad Bridgewater had easily his best game for the Supercats to date with 23 points and 10 rebounds but it was Myers who led all scorers with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Cox was again consistent with 15 while Nathan Herbert had 14. Jorden Page and Christian Salecich shared the honours for the ‘tute with 20 points each. The Supercats will return home on Friday 11th April at 7.30 pm for the return clash against Ballarat before travelling to Knox next Saturday. |
