March 15: Frankston Blues 105 (R. Kampman 36, D. Gruber 19, B. Strzebonski 14) defeated St. Laurence Geelong Supercats 93 (D. George 27, B. Cox 19, N. Herbert 16) at Frankston Basketball Stadium. There was no fairytale ending to Jarrod Leonard’s 300th game as a Supercat as Geelong succumbed to a powerful Frankston Blues outfit in Frankston on Saturday night.
From the opening tip off, Frankston applied strong defence to the Supercats. New import Brad Bridgewater was substituted into the game after five minutes and immediately made his presence felt with a one handed slam dunk but the burly centre was not to have the expected impact on the game. In a low scoring quarter, Geelong was held to just 15 points while Frankston had 22. Frankston extended their lead to 13 by half time and while Geelong regrouped to get the margin back to 8, back to back three pointers from Frankston import Rob Kampman helped the home side to a 29 to 18 point quarter to have Geelong on the ropes, 24 points down at the last break. The Supercats rallied in the last quarter, buoyed by vocal group of fans, and led by Centre Daniel George and Guard Braith Cox, to get the margin back to 12. At one stage, Geelong had outscored Frankston 32 to 16 in the quarter. Geelong’s momentum was halted, however, when the referee called an unsportsmanlike foul on Leonard, who was among six players wrestling for the ball under the Frankston basket. This did not stop Geelong’s charge completely as Nick Owusu kept on trying and Geelong remarkably got the margin back to 6 with a minute 20 to play. It was Kampman, again however, who wrested the game for Frankston with his eighth three pointer of the night. Frankston held on to record the win 105 to 93. The Supercats will play the Albury-Wodonga Bandits at the Arena on Easter Saturday. With Shawn Myers visa now available, the Trinidadian will be available for the Bandits game. |
