A bit of history about the players that made up the 25th Aniversary Team.
Guard: Calvin Bruton 106 ABA/NBL Games 1704 points @ 21.5p.p.g Free Throw 87% Coach 1982, 1983 & 1984 Bruton came to Geelong from Brisbane in 1980 and was instrumental in Geelong's championship success in the ABA in 1981. Subsequently he earned entry into the National Basketball League in 1982. Bruton was named NBL coach of the year in 1982 and was a member of the NBL all star 5 team in 1983. He has since gone onto win NBL titles with Perth and has undertaken head coaching positions with the Hobart Devils and Canberra Cannons. Guard: Shane Heal 75 NBL Games 547 Assists (Club record) 1531 points @ 20.4 p.p.g Free throw 81.05% Heal came to Geelong in 1989 with Barry Barnes and Jim Bateman and was a key figure in leading the club out of its on court problems of the late 1980's. He remains the clubs all time leading assist leader and is still in the clubs top ten scorers with over 1500 points in his three seasons at the club. Since departing Geelong Heal has gone onto represent Australia at the Olympics and has had stints in both the NBA and European Division One competition. Forward: Ian Davies 51 NBL Games 963 points @ 18.99 p.p.g Three pointers @38% Davies was inducted into the NBL Hall of Fame and will go down as one of the greatest three point shooters in the games history. Forward: James Crawford 105 NBL Games 1156 rebounds (Club record) 2802 points @ 26.69 p.p.g Field Goal @ 55% Crawford was recruited to the club at the start of the Supercats inaugural NBL season in 1982. he was an instant success and a sensation throughout Geelong and the league with his exceptional athleticism Whilst with the Supercats Crawford was a member of the 1982, 1983 and 1984 NBL all star team and is still the clubs all time leading rebounder. Crawford departed the Supercats in 1986 for Canberra. However most of his success was in Perth were he has won 4 NBL championships. Centre: John Dorge 53 NBL Games 795 points @15p.p.g. Field Goals @ 59% (Club record) 684 Rebounds Dorge came to the Supercats in 1990 and spent two season before transferring to the South East Melbounre Magic were he won an NBL title. He was an intimidating presence inside the key and remains 2nd on the clubs all time lists of shots blocked. Bench: Bobby Locke 73 NBL Games 2141 points @ 29.3 p.p.g (2nd all time) 382 assists (6th all time) 192 steals (4th all time) 50 points on debut Locke was one of the most dynamic players to play for the Supercats. He came ot the club in 1990 and in his first game, some 24 hours after arriving form the USA scored 50 points againsts Illawarra. Whilst he was little more than 5'8" he had the ability to dunk the ball and regularly excited the Geelong crowd with his fast break dunks. Lockes scoring average for Geelong of 29.3 p.p.g is the 2nd leading average in the clubs history. Locke was the back court partner to Shane Heal during the 1991 season and in his final season with the Club in 1992 Locke was named team captain. Bench: Daren Rowe 62 games 1206 points @ 19.45p.pg 627 rebounds 131 Blocks 3 points @ 39% Daren played remarkably similar to another one of the clubs star imports, Clyde Jordan. He led the league in blocked shots in 1990 and possessed a fantastic all round game recording triple double on a number of occasions. He left the club at the end of 1990 but returned to play 12 games 4 years later when Adrian Branch was sacked in the early part of the 1994 season. Bench: Danny Morseau 52 games 943 points @ 19.45 p.p.g 152 Assists 288 Rebounds Morseau spent two season with Geelong in 1994 and 1995 when he was named team captain and was an integral part of the Australian Boomers teams of the early to mid 1980's. Bench: Brad Dalton 87 NBL Games 1045 points @ 12.01 p.p.g Field Goal @ 52% 881 Rebounds 170 Blocks Dalton is another club captain and Australian representative. In his four seasons with the club starting in 1984 he made a solid contribution as the team centre but was unfortunately hampered by a serious knee injury towards the end of his time in Geelong. Ironically Dalton was a member of the West Adelaide Bearcats team that defeated Geelong in the NBL final in 1982. Bench: Terry Dozier 29 NBL Games 191 NBL Defensive Player of the year 639 points @ 22 p.p.g. Field Goal @ 55.17% Although Terry only spent the one season in Geelong he played a key role in getting the club to the 1991 finals and was also named the NBL defensive player of the year. Dozier went on to play for Newcastle in the NBL before returning to the USA. Coach: Barry Barnes 1989-1991 79 NBL games 34 wins / 45 loss 1991 VBA Championship Barnes spent three seasons with the club from 1989 and forms a key partnership with Shane heal in getting the club back as a competitive force in the NBL. Barnes was both an assistant and head coach of the Australian Boomers team and led the country to a 4th place finish at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. |
