Jamaican/American Kimmani Barrett has been added to the St Laurence Geelong Supercats roster for the 2012 season. Barrett and Theron Wilson are the new import duo set to thrill the Arena in the upcoming SEABL season.
Barrett, a 198cm Forward, graduated from La Salle University in 2010 after an outstanding college career for the Explorers. He has since played in Germany with VfB 1900 Giessen where he helped the team to the semi finals in the Pro B League. Most recently he played in Spain LEB Gold with Navarra on a short term deal to replace an injured player.
La Salle is the college of former NBL All Star and NBA veteran Doug Overton and Barrett has heard a lot of good things from him about Australia and the basketball talent down under. “I have been told the leagues here are pretty strong, the country is beautiful and the people are really nice”.
Supercats SEABL Men’s Head Coach Jamie O’Loughlin and Assistant Coach Leon O’Neill researched many players for the position but feel Barrett is perfect for the St Laurence Geelong Supercats.
“Kimmani was one of the first players we looked at, his numbers are good, the film we saw was good, he went straight to the top of our short list. After doing some further research both Leon and I felt that Kimmani offered the total package, he plays hard at both ends of the floor, is able to play almost every position and has a very good basketball IQ, he is an all around player”.
Barrett is looking forward to the opportunity.
“I am really looking forward to playing for the Supercats, from what I hear it’s a nice place to live, the fans are great to play for and the club has a really successful program, I’m excited to be joining the club.”
The local content of the Supercats team are hard at work in pre season and have been joined by some of the outstanding talent from the Youth League Men, U20 and U18 teams. The local players will participate in a tournament in Millicent SA, 17-19 February with Barrett and Wilson arriving days after. Four practice games have been scheduled for the first two weekends in March against Big V and SEABL teams, details of these games will be released soon.
